چکیده

We construct quasiequilibrium sequences of black hole-neutron star binaries for arbitrary mass ratios by solving the constraint equations of general relativity in the conformal thin-sandwich decomposition. We model the neutron star as a stationary polytrope satisfying the relativistic equations of hydrodynamics, and account for the black hole by imposing equilibrium boundary conditions on the surface of an excised sphere (the apparent horizon). In this paper we focus on irrotational configurations, meaning that both the neutron star and the black hole are approximately nonspinning in an inertial frame. We present results for a binary with polytropic index n = 1, mass ratio M irr /M NS B = 5 and neutron star compaction M NS ADM,0/R0 = 0.0879, where M BH irr is the irreducible mass of the black hole, M B the neutron star baryon rest-mass, and M NS ADM,0 and R0 the neutron star Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass and areal radius in isolation, respectively. Our models represent valid solutions to Einstein’s constraint equations and may therefore be employed as initial data for dynamical simulations of black hole-neutron star binaries.

Initial data for black hole–neutron star binaries: A flexible, high-accuracy spectral method

We present a new numerical scheme to solve the initial value problem for black hole–neutron star binaries. This method takes advantage of the flexibility and fast convergence of a multidomain spectral representation of the initial data to construct high-accuracy solutions at a relatively low computational cost. We provide convergence tests of the method for both isolated neutron stars and irrot...

The Dynamical Evolution of Black Hole-Neutron Star Binaries in General Relativity: Simulations of Tidal Disruption

We calculate the first dynamical evolutions of merging black hole-neutron star binaries that construct the combined black hole-neutron star spacetime in a general relativistic framework. We treat the metric in the conformal flatness approximation, and assume that the black hole mass is sufficiently large compared to that of the neutron star so that the black hole remains fixed in space. Using a...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Coalescence of Black Hole-Neutron Star Binaries

We review the current status of general relativistic studies for the coalescence of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) binaries. First, procedures for a solution of BH-NS binaries in quasi-equilibrium circular orbits and the numerical results, such as quasi-equilibrium sequence and mass-shedding limit, of the high-precision computation, are summarized. Then, the current status of numerical-relativ...

Binary neutron star mergers in fully general relativistic simulations

We perform 3D numerical simulations for merger of equal mass binary neutron stars in full general relativity preparing irrotational binary neutron stars in a quasiequilibrium state as initial conditions. Simulations have been carried out for a wide range of stiffness of equations of state and compactness of neutron stars, paying particular attention to the final products and gravitational waves...
